Early Life and Education
Madan Lal Khurana was born on October 15, 1936, in Lyallpur, which was then part of British India. Today, this place is known as Faisalabad in Pakistan. His parents were S. D. Khurana and Laxmi Devi.
When Khurana was about 12 years old, his family had to move to Delhi because of the Partition of India. They rebuilt their lives in a refugee colony called Kirti Nagar in New Delhi. He later earned his bachelor's degree from Kirori Mal College, which is part of Delhi University.
Political Journey
Student Days
Khurana started his political training while studying economics at Allahabad University. He was the general secretary of the Allahabad Students Union in 1959. The next year, in 1960, he became the general secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a student organization.
Joining Politics
Before entering politics, Khurana worked as a teacher at PGDAV (evening) College. Madan Lal Khurana, along with Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Kedar Nath Sahani, and Kanwar Lal Gupta, helped start the Delhi branch of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh. This party later became the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980. Khurana served as the general secretary of the Jan Sangh from 1965 to 1967. He played a big role in Delhi's local politics, serving as Chief Whip, Executive Councillor, and Leader of the Opposition in the Metropolitan Council.
Rising in the BJP
After the death of Indira Gandhi, the BJP faced difficulties in the 1984 general elections. Khurana is known for helping the party recover and grow strong again in Delhi. He worked very hard, which earned him the nickname 'Dilli Ka Sher', meaning 'Lion of Delhi'.
He became the Chief Minister of Delhi in 1993 and served until 1996. He later resigned from this position. Khurana, along with Kedar Nath Sahani and Vijay Kumar Malhotra, helped lead the BJP in New Delhi for over 40 years, from the 1960s to the 2000s.
Important Roles
A major highlight of his career was serving as the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Tourism. He held these positions in the government led by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Khurana also served as the Governor of Rajasthan. He held this role from January 14, 2004, to October 28, 2004. He resigned from this position to return to active politics in Delhi.
Personal Life
Madan Lal Khurana was married to Raj Khurana. They had four children together. Sadly, one of his sons, Vimal, passed away in August 2018.
Two months later, on October 27, 2018, Madan Lal Khurana died at his home in Kirti Nagar, New Delhi. He was 82 years old. He had suffered a brain hemorrhage five years before his death and had been unwell since then.
