Who Was Kailashpati Mishra?
Kailashpati Mishra was a respected figure in Indian politics. People often called him the "Bhishma Pitamaha" of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar. This nickname means he was like a wise and strong elder, much like a legendary character from an ancient Indian epic. He dedicated his life to public service.
His Early Life and Fight for Freedom
Kailashpati Mishra was born on October 5, 1923. His birthplace was Dudharchak, in the Buxar, Bihar region of India. He came from a family known as Bhumihar Brahmin. Even as a young student, he was passionate about India's freedom.
When he was in class X, he joined the Quit India Movement in 1942. This was a big movement where Indians demanded independence from British rule. He was arrested for protesting at his school gate. He was also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from 1943. He faced imprisonment again for his political activities.
A Long Political Journey
Kailashpati Mishra began his active political career by running for the Lok Sabha election in 1971. He represented the Jana Sangh party in Patna. Although he did not win that election, he continued his efforts.
In 1977, he won the Bihar Vidhan Sabha election. This meant he became a member of the state assembly from the Bikram area. After this victory, he was chosen to be the Finance Minister of Bihar. He served in this role from 1977 to 1979. He was part of the Janata Party government led by Karpoori Thakur.
Leading the BJP in Bihar
When the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was formed in 1980, Kailashpati Mishra became its first president in Bihar. This was a very important role in building the new party. He also served as the BJP's national Vice President for many years. He held this position from 1995 to 2003.
Serving as Governor
In 2003, Kailashpati Mishra was appointed as the Governor of Gujarat. A governor is like the head of a state, representing the President of India. For a short time, he also took on an extra role. He became the caretaker Governor of Rajasthan after the previous governor passed away. He served in these important roles until 2004.
His Legacy and Passing
Kailashpati Mishra was a lifelong bachelor. He remained an inspiration for the BJP party throughout his life. Even in his later years, when he was less active, his wisdom guided many. He was also respected by other political groups. This was because he joined in the 1974 anti-Congress protests led by JP (Jayaprakash Narayan).
Kailashpati Mishra passed away in 2012 at the age of 89. Many important leaders, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, paid their respects. To honor his contributions, the Indian government released a special postal stamp in 2016.
