The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi is like the main representative or head of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This important job started in September 1966. It was created after a law called The Delhi Administration Act, 1966, was passed.

Before this, Delhi had a different kind of government. The old Delhi Legislative Assembly was replaced by the Delhi Metropolitan Council. This council had 56 elected members and 5 members chosen by others. The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi was in charge of this council. However, this council could not make laws. It only gave advice on how to run Delhi. This system continued until 1990, when the Assembly was brought back. The Lieutenant Governor kept their important role.

A new law, The National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021, was passed in 2021. This law states that whenever the word "Government" is used in laws made by the Delhi Assembly, it means the Lieutenant Governor.

The person currently serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi is Vinai Kumar Saxena. The official home for the Lieutenant Governor is called Raj Niwas. It is located in Civil Lines, Delhi.
