Anil Baijal (born on November 1, 1946) is a retired government officer from India. He was the 21st Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. This important role is like being the head of a union territory, similar to a state governor.

Mr. Baijal started his term on December 31, 2016. He took over after the previous Lieutenant Governor, Najeeb Jung, resigned. Mr. Baijal served in this position until May 23, 2022, when his term ended. He sent his resignation letter to the President of India on May 18, 2022.

Early Life and Education

Anil Baijal studied at two different universities. He earned a master's degree in arts from the University of Allahabad in India. Later, he also got a master's degree in development economics from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom. These studies helped him prepare for his long career in public service.

His Career Journey

Anil Baijal was part of the 1969 group of officers in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). IAS officers are highly skilled government officials who help run the country. He belonged to the AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) group of officers.

Important Roles in Government

Mr. Baijal held many significant positions throughout his career. He served as the Union Home Secretary under the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This role is very important for national security.

He also worked as the Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority. This agency plans and develops the city of Delhi. He was the Chief Secretary of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which are a group of islands in India.

Other Key Positions

Anil Baijal also served as an additional Home Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. He was the Managing Director (MD) of Indian Airlines, a major airline. He also worked as the CEO of Prasar Bharati, which runs public broadcasting in India.

He was the Development Commissioner of Goa, helping with the development of that state. He also served as the Commissioner for Sales Tax and Excise in Delhi. Additionally, he was a Councilor in Charge of the India Aid Mission in Nepal. He played a role in starting DD Bharti, a television channel.

After Retirement

Mr. Baijal retired from government service in 2006. His last role before retiring was as the Secretary of the Urban Development Ministry. After retirement, he continued to be involved in important projects.

He helped with the planning and execution of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). This was a large government program aimed at improving cities. He also served as the President of the National Institute of Urban Affairs from 2012 to 2014. He also advised various government groups. These included the National e-Governance Advisory Group and a group for developing power, coal, and renewable energy.
