The Chief Minister of Goa is the main leader of the government in the Indian state of Goa. Think of them as the chief executive, making important decisions for the state.
According to India's Constitution, the governor is the official head of a state. However, the Chief Minister actually holds most of the power. After elections for the Goa Legislative Assembly, the state's governor usually asks the party or group of parties with the most seats to form the government. The governor then appoints the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister and their team of ministers work together and are responsible to the assembly. As long as they have the support of the assembly, the Chief Minister serves for five years. There is no limit to how many terms a Chief Minister can serve.
After Goa became part of India, this former Portuguese area became a union territory called Goa, Daman and Diu. In 1987, Goa became a full state, while Daman and Diu became a separate union territory. Since 1963, thirteen people have served as Chief Minister for either the union territory or the state of Goa. The first was Dayanand Bandodkar. His daughter, Shashikala Kakodkar, later became Chief Minister, making her Goa's only woman Chief Minister. Pratapsingh Rane has served the longest, for over 15 years in total. He was Chief Minister when Goa became a state.
The current Chief Minister is Pramod Sawant from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He took office on March 19, 2019, after the death of the previous Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar.
