What's in a Name? The Story of Chilcotin

The name "Chilcotin" comes from the Chilcotin River. This river's name is an English version of "Tsilhqotʼin". This is the name of the local indigenous people who have lived in this area for a very long time. In their own language, "Tsilhqotʼin" means "People of the rocks". It tells us about their strong connection to the land.

Communities Around Chilcotin Lake

The small community of Chezacut is located on the north shore of Chilcotin Lake. Nearby, you can also find Chezacut Cemetery Indian Reserve No. 5. Many other First Nations reserves belonging to the Alexis Creek First Nation are also close by. These are generally found to the west and northwest of the lake. These communities are important parts of the history and culture of the Chilcotin area.
