China Chalet was a well-known Chinese restaurant in the Financial District of New York City. It opened in 1975 and was famous for its fancy dim sum banquet hall. Many business people enjoyed dining there.
Later, in the 2000s, China Chalet also became a popular place for evening events. It was used as an event space, a music venue, and a place for parties. China Chalet closed its doors for good in 2020.
History of China Chalet
China Chalet first opened in 1975. It was located in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City. You could find it on Broadway, close to Exchange Place.
The restaurant served American Chinese cuisine in a grand banquet hall style. It could seat over 800 people in three separate areas. There were also two bars offering full drink service. The design was typical of Chinese banquet halls in Manhattan. It had soft carpets, elegant curtains, and waiters dressed formally.
China Chalet kept this classic style until it closed in 2020. It was one of the longest-running Chinese banquet halls in the Wall Street area.
China Chalet as an Event Space
Around the mid-2000s, China Chalet started renting out its space. It became a place for concerts and special evening events. However, it still operated as a restaurant during the day.
A magazine called New York reported the first big party was in 2005. It was an after-party for a photo exhibition. After that, regular parties began to be held there. These events brought in a different kind of crowd. It was an "artsy crowd" that was very different from the usual daytime business customers.
By 2011, The New York Times noted that China Chalet had become a favorite spot. It was popular with people in fashion and art for about five years. Renting the space was not very expensive. This helped China Chalet become known for hosting parties for many different people.
Closure of China Chalet
China Chalet permanently closed in 2020. The exact reason for its closure was not officially given. However, many people thought it was because of the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic.
There were also two other China Chalet locations. One was on the Upper East Side and another in Eltingville, Staten Island. The Eltingville location opened in 2006 and also closed in 2020. The Upper East Side location closed by 2021.
