China Grove is a small, unincorporated community in northwestern Brazoria County, Texas. An unincorporated community means it's a place with a shared identity but no local government. It is part of the larger Greater Houston metropolitan area.
History of China Grove
China Grove got its name from a large farm, called a plantation. This plantation was built by Warren D. C. Hall. Later, it was owned by Albert Sidney Johnston and Albert T. Burnley. The name "China Grove" came from a group of chinaberry trees. These trees were planted there to provide shade.
Warren D. C. Hall also grew figs and oranges on the plantation. China Grove was an important stop on the Columbia Tap Railroad. This was true from before 1877 until 1892. In 1892, the town of Custer was started.
By 1974, there were only a few homes scattered around the community. Today, not much is left of the original plantation. You can still see some hedges of the Cherokee rose. There is also a cemetery from that time.
