The DF4D (which means "East Wind 4D" in Chinese) is a powerful type of diesel locomotive used in China. It was built by a company called Dalian Locomotive & Rolling Stock Works. These engines started being made in 1996 and continued production until at least 2012. The DF4D is a very common train engine in China. It's used for both pulling passenger trains and moving heavy cargo (freight) across the country.

Different Types of DF4D Locomotives

The DF4D series has several different models. Each model was designed for specific tasks, like pulling fast passenger trains or heavy freight.

DF4D 0000 Series: The "Tiger"

The very first DF4D locomotive was built in 1996. This early version is known as the 0000 Series. It used a strong engine called the 16V240ZJD. Over several years, 580 of these locomotives were built. Railway fans in China often call this series the "Tiger" because of its power.

DF4D 3000 Series: The "Flower Tiger"

The 3000 Series started being built in 1999. These locomotives were designed to be faster for passenger trains. They had special features like improved suspension and better braking systems. They also had a different type of traction motor. Chinese railway fans gave this series the nickname "Flower Tiger".

DF4D 4000 Series: For Heavy Freight

The first 4000 Series locomotives were also built in 1999. These engines were made specifically for pulling very heavy freight. Their top speed was set at 100 kilometers per hour (about 62 miles per hour). However, they had a much stronger pulling force, which is called tractive effort. This allowed them to move much heavier loads.

One special 4000 Series locomotive, numbered 1893, was the fourth generation of the famous Mao Zedong Locomotive. It is no longer in service. Fans often call the 4000 Series the "Ukraine" because its paint colors reminded them of the Ukrainian flag.

DF4D 7000 Series: For Mountain Tracks

In 2000, the first 7000 Series locomotive was built. These were designed to work on mountain railways in southwest China. They had special wheels that could steer themselves around curves better. This helped them handle the challenging mountain tracks. However, after 2007, these special wheels were replaced with regular ones on most of these 21 locomotives.

The 7000 Series is known as the "Liuzhou Tiger" by railway fans. This is because many of them spent their working lives at the Liuzhou Locomotive Depot. This depot is part of the Nanning Railway Bureau.
