Chinique is a small town, also known as a municipality, located in the Guatemalan department of El Quiché. Its name comes from the Kʼicheʼ language and means «chinic´aj taka´aj». In 1892, a famous explorer named Alfred Maudslay and his wife Anne visited Chinique. They described it as a small group of houses made from adobe (a type of mud brick) with roofs made of thatch (dried plant material). As of 2023, about 14,052 people live in Chinique.
