Chinácota is a small town and a type of local government area called a municipality in Colombia, South America. It is found in the Norte de Santander Department, which is in the northeast part of Colombia. This area is close to the border with Venezuela.
About 15,000 people live in Chinácota and its surrounding areas. This number is based on a census from 2005. The municipality covers an area of about 167 square kilometers (64 square miles).
Chinácota is located high up in the mountains, about 1,175 meters (3,855 feet) above sea level. The weather is usually mild, with temperatures ranging from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius (54 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit).
The main town area of Chinácota has about 29 neighborhoods. There are around 2,600 houses in the town.
History of Chinácota
Chinácota was founded a long time ago, in the year 1553. Two Spanish explorers, Pedro de Orsua and Ortun Velasco, established the town.
They were given the job of working with the local groups of people. These groups included the Bocarema, Chinaquillo, Bochaga, and Bateca. The explorers also helped to set up other towns.
One of these towns was called "St. John the Baptist." It was located where Chinácota is today. The Spanish called the native people of this area "chitareros." This name came from the special musical instruments they used. These instruments were made from gourds and reeds.

Chinácota has a warm and generally wet climate. The average temperature is around 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). The town gets a good amount of rainfall throughout the year.
