The Chipwich is a super tasty ice cream sandwich! It's made with creamy ice cream squished between two soft chocolate chip cookies. Then, the sides are rolled in chocolate chips, which stick right to the ice cream.

The Chipwich name and logo are special. They are protected by a trademark owned by Crave Better Foods, LLC. This company is based in Cos Cob, Connecticut.

The very first Chipwich was created in 1978. Two Americans, Richard LaMotta and Sam Metzger, invented it in New York City. Their original Chipwich used vanilla ice cream. It was placed between two chocolate chip cookies. The sides were then rolled in chocolate chips.

The Sweet Story of Chipwich

How Chipwich Began

Ice cream sandwiches were already popular in New York City. They had been sold there since the 1890s. But in 1978, Richard LaMotta, a lawyer from New York, created something new: the Chipwich!

He launched it with a clever plan. He trained sixty street vendors, mostly students, to sell the new treat. They sold them on the streets of New York for just one dollar each. This helped the Chipwich become a popular brand very quickly.

On the first day, about 25,000 Chipwiches were sold! Within two weeks, the company was selling 40,000 every day.

Challenges and Changes

The small company faced some tough times. It was hard for them to get enough money to grow. In 1984, Chipwich had to ask for special legal protection. This helped them reorganize their business.

By 1987, the founders, Sam Metzger and Richard LaMotta, had fixed things. They got a big investment of $1 million from a Swedish company called Hexagon AB. This money helped them keep going.

However, in 1992, the company ran into more money problems. They had to reorganize again. This was partly because of some accounting issues.

New Owners and a Comeback

In 2002, a company called CoolBrands International bought Chipwich. This made CoolBrands one of the biggest ice cream sellers in North America.

Later, CoolBrands had its own financial problems. So, in 2007, they sold Chipwich to Dreyer's. Dreyer's is a part of Nestlé, a very large food company.

By 2009, Nestlé stopped making the original Chipwich. Some people thought it was because it competed with another ice cream sandwich they owned.

But the story didn't end there! In 2017, a new company bought the Chipwich trademark. This company is Crave Better Foods, LLC. They are based in Cos Cob, Connecticut.

In 2018, the Chipwich was relaunched in the U.S. It made a big comeback! In 2020, the brand even introduced a fun new flavor: Birthday Cake.
