A Chipwich is a yummy ice cream sandwich. It has creamy ice cream placed between two soft chocolate chip cookies. The sides are then rolled in chocolate chips, which stick to the ice cream.

The Chipwich name and logo are owned by Crave Better Foods, LLC. This company is located in Cos Cob, Connecticut. The first Chipwich was made in New York City in 1978. It was created by two Americans, Richard LaMotta and Sam Metzger. Their original Chipwich had vanilla ice cream with chocolate chip cookies.

The Story of Chipwich

Ice cream sandwiches have been sold in New York City since the 1890s. But the Chipwich was a new idea in 1978. Richard LaMotta, a lawyer from New York, created it. He introduced the Chipwich to the city in a very clever way.

He hired about sixty street vendors, mostly students. They sold the new Chipwich on the streets of New York for one dollar each. This helped the Chipwich become very popular very quickly. On the first day, about 25,000 Chipwiches were sold! Within two weeks, the company was selling 40,000 every day.

Challenges and Changes

The small company faced some challenges as it tried to grow. It was hard to find enough money to make more Chipwiches. In 1984, the Chipwich company had to reorganize its business.

By 1987, the founders, Sam Metzger and Richard LaMotta, had reorganized the company. They received a large investment of $1 million from a Swedish company called Hexagon AB. This helped them continue making and selling Chipwiches.

New Owners and Flavors

In 2002, a company called CoolBrands International bought Chipwich. This made CoolBrands one of the biggest ice cream sellers in North America. Later, in 2007, CoolBrands sold Chipwich to the Dreyer's part of Nestlé.

By 2009, Nestlé stopped making the original Chipwich. People believed this was because it was similar to Nestlé's own Toll House cookie ice cream sandwich.
