Chiquititas, also known as Chiquititas Remake, is a popular Brazilian TV show. It aired from 2013 to 2015 on the SBT channel. The show is a soap opera, which means it tells a long story over many episodes.
This version of Chiquititas is based on an older show from Argentina. It's also a remake of a previous Brazilian version. The story was written by Íris Abravanel. Reynaldo Boury directed the show, and Ricardo Mantoanelli directed the music videos.
SBT announced the remake in 2012. They wanted to keep the good ratings from another show called Carrossel, which was also for young viewers. Chiquititas was so popular that it ran for two extra seasons. It finally ended in 2015.
The main star of Chiquititas is Manuela do Monte. She plays Carol, a kind young woman. Carol slowly becomes like a mother to a group of orphans. These children live in a special home called the Raio de Luz orphanage. Isabela Palhano plays Ana Paula, an orphan who wants to find out about her family.

What is Chiquititas About?
The story of Chiquititas begins with a man named José Ricardo Almeida Campos. He is very traditional. When his daughter, Gabriela, has a child, he takes his granddaughter away. He does this because he doesn't approve of Gabriela's choices.
The Raio de Luz Orphanage
José Ricardo then creates an orphanage called "Raio De Luz" (meaning "Light Gleam"). This is where his granddaughter, Ana Paula (played by Isabela Palhano), grows up. She lives there with other girls who arrive later. These girls include Bia, Ana, and sisters Tati and Vivi, along with Cris. They all become like a family.
The girls are looked after by Ernestina, the strict but funny janitor. Chico, the kind chef, is also loved by all the children. Sofia used to be the director of the orphanage. But then Carmem (Giovanna Gold), José Ricardo's ambitious sister, takes over.
Later, more children join the family at Raio de Luz. These are Pata, Mosca, Binho, and Rafa. They used to live on the streets. Pata and Ana Paula become best friends. Binho, Mosca, and Rafa are the first boys to live in the orphanage.
Carol and Junior's Story
A kind young woman brings the homeless children to the orphanage. She changes their lives and the lives of the girls already there. This woman is Carolina (Manuela do Monte), or Carol. Carol works at one of the Almeida family's cafes. She is also studying psychology.
Carol lives with her friend Clarita and her brother Beto. They take care of Dani, a girl whose mother recently passed away. At work, Carol meets Junior (Guilherme Boury). He is José Ricardo's youngest son. Junior is an economist who lived in London and has returned to São Paulo for business.
Junior finds out that his sister, Gabriela, is not well. He blames his father for her condition. Junior also starts to question his father's actions, seeing him as snobby and selfish. Together with Carol, Junior helps Ana Paula search for her past.
Carol and Junior fall in love. But José Ricardo tries to keep them apart because he is snobby. His daughter, Gabriela, believes she had a baby that didn't survive. This was a lie her father told her after Ana Paula was born. Ana Paula helps Gabriela feel better, without either of them knowing they are related.
How the Show Was Made
Unlike the older Brazilian version, this Chiquititas was made entirely in Brazil. Also, the actors in this show sing the songs themselves. In the older version, the songs were dubbed by other singers. Because of this, actors needed to show they could sing well during auditions.
Meet the Actors
Manuela do Monte plays Carol. She said she didn't watch the previous Brazilian Chiquititas show. Instead, she got ideas from visiting a real orphanage. The role of Carol was played by Flávia Monteiro in the earlier Brazilian show. In the original Argentine show, Romina Yan played the character Belén Fraga.
Isabela Palhano plays Ana Paula, one of the oldest orphans. Isabela said she wanted to make the character her own. But she also praised how Fernanda Souza played the role before. That role helped Fernanda Souza become very famous. The original Ana Paula was played by Argentine actress Agustina Cherri. Isabela auditioned seven times to get the part!
Gésio Amadeu played Chico the Chef in the older Brazilian Chiquititas. SBT asked him to play the role again. But he couldn't because he was busy with another TV show. So, Gésio Amadeu suggested João Acaiabe for the part. The character of the chef was originally played by Alberto Fernández de Rosa in Argentina.
Reynaldo Boury directed the series. Fernando Pelegio produced it, and Íris Abravanel wrote it. This team also created the show Carrossel. What's special about this Chiquititas is that the original creator, Cris Morena, was not involved in making it.
Original Cast Reactions
Flávia Monteiro, who played Carol in the first Brazilian version, supported the remake. She said, "I'm sure it'll be a huge hit. I hope they keep that magic and feeling." Fernanda Souza, who played Ana Paula before, also liked the new show. She said Chiquititas is a "beautiful work which children and teenagers need." She added, "Its innocence is missing." About the new Ana Paula, she said, "She was a very special role to me, and I'm sure she's going to change her [Isabela Palhano's] life as well."
Actor Nelson Freitas, who played Doctor Fernando Brausen, thought the remake might do well. But he felt it would be hard to beat the strong feeling of the original show.
