History of Chièvres
World War I and Liberation
During the First World War, Chièvres was under military occupation for four years. This means it was controlled by an opposing army. In 1918, the 5th Battalion of the Gordon Highlanders, a brave group of soldiers, helped free the town.
To remember this important event, one of the main streets in Chièvres was named Rue Dudley Gordon. This street was named after Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Dudley Gordon. He was the leader of the 5th Battalion. The town gave him a special key to Chièvres as a sign of their thanks. In return, the battalion gave the town the flag they had fought under since 1915.
