Chloridops is a group of birds that are now extinct. They were a type of Hawaiian honeycreeper, which are special birds found only in Hawaii. These birds belonged to the larger finch family.

About Chloridops Birds

The Chloridops birds were unique because they lived only on the islands of Hawaii. This means they were endemic to Hawaii, which means they weren't found anywhere else in the world.

There were three different kinds of Chloridops birds. Two of these species lived on the Big Island of Hawaii. The third species lived on the islands of Kauai, Oahu, and Maui.

Different Kinds of Chloridops

The Chloridops group included three known species:

  • Kona grosbeak (Chloridops kona)
    • This bird became extinct in 1894. This means the last one died in that year, and there are none left alive today.
  • Wahi grosbeak (Chloridops wahi)
    • This species is considered prehistoric. This means it died out a very long time ago, before humans started keeping detailed records. We know about it from fossils.
  • King Kong grosbeak (Chloridops regiskongi)
    • Like the Wahi grosbeak, this bird is also prehistoric. It lived and died out many thousands of years ago.
