Choccolocco is a small community in Calhoun County, Alabama, United States. It is not a city with its own government. Instead, it is called an "unincorporated community." It is also a "census-designated place," which means the U.S. Census Bureau counts its population separately.

In 2020, about 2,838 people lived in Choccolocco. The community was started in 1832.

The name Choccolocco comes from the Creek Native American words. It is an "anglicization," which means the Native American words were changed to sound more like English. The original words were "chahko lago" (meaning "big shoals") or "choko rakko" (meaning "big house").

The Choccolocco Monster Story

Choccolocco became famous for a short time in 2001 because of a local legend. This legend was about the "Choccolocco Monster." People said they saw a strange creature in the area in the late 1960s.

In October 2001, a newspaper called the Anniston Star shared the truth. The "monster" was actually a local teenager named Neal Williamson. When he was young, Neal would dress up in a costume. His costume included a cow skull and a sheet. He would jump out of the woods near the road. This often surprised people driving by.

Choccolocco first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1890 as a town. A "census" is an official count of how many people live in an area. After 1890, Choccolocco was not listed again until 2010. In 2010, it became a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means the Census Bureau decided to count its population as a specific area, even though it doesn't have its own city government.
