The Choctaw People
The community of Choctaw is named after the Choctaw people. They are a Native American tribe. The Choctaw were one of the "Five Civilized Tribes" of the Southeast. This name was given to them by Europeans because they adopted many European customs.
The Choctaw people lived in this area for a very long time. However, in the 1830s, many Choctaw were moved. They were forced to go to a new place called Indian Territory. This territory is now part of the state of Oklahoma.
Some Choctaw people chose to stay in Mississippi. Their descendants today form the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. This group is officially recognized by the United States government.
