Choi's International Football Journey
Choi Soon-ho played for the South Korean national team for many years. He showed his talent in big tournaments around the world.
Young Talent in Asia
In 1980, Choi was part of the South Korean team for the 1980 AFC Asian Cup. He scored seven goals in this tournament. This included two goals against Kuwait and three goals (a hat-trick) against the United Arab Emirates. South Korea reached the final but lost to Kuwait. Choi became the youngest top scorer in the AFC Asian Cup at just 18 years old.
The next year, in 1981, he led the South Korean under-20 team to win the 1980 AFC Youth Championship. He scored four goals in that competition. He also played in the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championship that same year. In one game, he helped his team beat Italy 4–1 by scoring two goals and setting up two others.
Playing in the World Cup
Choi was chosen for the South Korean team that played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. He was a key player during the qualification games, helping with more than half of the team's 17 goals. He scored one goal and made eight assists in eight games.
During the World Cup itself, he scored a goal from outside the penalty area against Italy. He also provided two assists in the tournament. This showed that he could perform well on the world stage, not just in Asia.
After the World Youth Championship and the 1986 World Cup, a famous Italian club called Juventus was interested in signing Choi. However, his team, POSCO Atoms, did not let him go.
Choi's Playing Style
Choi Soon-ho was known as one of the most skilled forwards in South Korea. He was excellent at controlling the ball. He could shoot, dribble, touch, and pass the ball with great precision.
He was also fast and had a wide view of the field, meaning he could see where all the players were. He was a very complete player with hardly any weaknesses. While he usually played as a striker (a player who scores goals), he could also play as an attacking midfielder. In this role, he would help create chances for other players to score.
