Cholpon Aalievna Sultanbekova (Kyrgyz: Чолпон Аалыевна Султанбекова, Çolpon Aalıevna (Aalı qızı) Sultanbekova; born 19 August 1969) is a politician from Kyrgyzstan. She has served as a Deputy Prime Minister of her country. She was also a member of the Supreme Council, which is Kyrgyzstan's parliament.
Early Life and Education
Cholpon Sultanbekova was born on August 19, 1969. Her birthplace was Bishkek, which was then called Frunze. She studied at the Michurinsky Pedagogical Institute in Russia. Later, in 2006, she earned degrees in law and international relations. She completed these studies at the Kyrgyz State Academy of Law.
Political Career and Public Service
Sultanbekova started her career working at a registry office in Jalal-Abad. In 1995, she became the Director General of a company called Palvan in Osh. From 2000 to 2001, she led the Congress of Women of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Southern Region. In 2005, she started a non-governmental organization (NGO) called Eco-Harmony of Women.
Sultanbekova is a member of the Respublika Party of Kyrgyzstan. In 2006, she ran for a seat in parliament. She was elected as a member of the Jogorku Kenesh (Kyrgyzstan's parliament) in 2010. In 2012, she joined the Committee on Education, Science, Culture and Sport. She also became the head of the Committee of Youth Policy.
In October 2013, she was chosen to be the Deputy Speaker of the parliament. From January 2015 to January 2017, she was part of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
On November 9, 2016, the parliament approved her as Deputy Prime Minister. She was responsible for social affairs. She served under Prime Minister Sooronbay Jeenbekov. She took over this role from Gulmira Kudaiberdieva.
