Chord facts for kids
In music, a chord is a group of two or more notes played at the same time. When you hear notes played together, it creates a special sound. Some people say a chord needs at least three notes, but even two notes played together can sound like a chord.
What Makes a Chord?
Chords are often built using specific notes from a scale. For example, a common type of chord is called a "triad." This chord uses the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes from a scale.
If these notes come from a major scale, you get a major chord. These often sound bright and happy. If they come from a minor scale, you get a minor chord. These can sound a bit more serious or sad. But remember, any time you play several notes together, it's generally called a chord!
Playing Two Notes Together
When only two notes are played at the same time, it's sometimes called a "double stop." This term comes from organs, where "stops" control different sets of pipes.
Instruments That Play Chords
Many instruments can play chords. Some common ones include:
On string instruments, like a violin or cello, players can create chords by bowing across two strings at once. A violinist can even make it sound like they are playing a four-note chord by quickly bowing two strings, then the other two. Some wind instrument players can also make chords by playing two or more harmonics together.
