A Look Back: History of Clifton Gardens

Clifton Gardens has an interesting past. An early settler named Captain E. H. Cliffe bought a large piece of land here. It was about 56 acres (23 hectares) right by the water. He called his estate "Cliffeton," and that's likely where the name Clifton Gardens comes from.

Early Days and the Marine Hotel

In 1871, a hotel called the Clifton Arms was built by D. Butters. Later, in 1880, David Thompson bought the hotel. He then built a new hotel called the Marine Hotel, which was open from 1885 until 1967. Thompson also built a wharf and a dancing pavilion. This made Clifton Gardens a very popular place for picnics and fun outings.

A Popular Picnic Spot

In 1906, a company called Sydney Ferries Limited bought Thompson's property. This included the hotel, wharf, dancing pavilion, and even a skating rink. The company added a huge circular swimming area that could hold 3,000 people watching. They also built a boat shed and a small tramway from the wharf to the hotel. Before the First World War, ferries would bring many picnickers to Clifton Gardens on weekends. Sadly, the main building burned down in 1956. The Clifton Gardens Hotel was finally taken down on November 17, 1967.
