Growing Up and Early Baseball
Chris Carter was born in Redwood City, California. When he was about seven or eight years old, his family moved to Las Vegas. He went to Sierra Vista High School. In 2005, his high school baseball team won the state championship in Nevada.
Starting His Pro Journey
Drafted and Minor League Years
Chris was chosen by the Chicago White Sox in the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft. This is when professional baseball teams pick young players to join their system. He started playing for the Bristol White Sox in 2005. This was a "Rookie-level" team, which is the first step in professional baseball. He hit 10 home runs and had 37 runs batted in (RBIs) that year.
He continued playing in the minor leagues, which are like training grounds for future MLB players. He played for different teams, hitting many home runs and RBIs. In 2007, the White Sox traded Chris to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Playing in Major League Baseball
Oakland Athletics: First MLB Team
Soon after, Chris was traded to the Oakland Athletics. He kept playing well in the minor leagues, hitting 39 home runs in 2008. He was even named the California League Rookie of the Year. In 2008 and 2009, he was recognized as one of the top prospects for the Athletics.
Chris joined the Oakland Athletics' main team in 2010. He played his first MLB game on August 9, 2010. On September 22, 2010, he hit his very first major league home run against the Chicago White Sox. He played for the Athletics until 2012, splitting his time between the major and minor leagues.
Houston Astros: Hitting Big Homers
After the 2012 season, Chris was traded to the Houston Astros. In 2013, he played in 148 games. He hit 29 home runs and had 82 RBIs. He also struck out many times, which means he missed hitting the ball.
In 2014, Chris had a great year for home runs. He hit a career-high 37 home runs and had 88 RBIs. In 2015, he continued to hit home runs, with 24 for the season. He helped the Astros get close to the playoffs that year. After the 2015 season, Chris became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team.
Milwaukee Brewers: Leading the League
In 2016, Chris signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. This was a fantastic year for him! He hit 41 home runs, which was the most in the entire National League. He played in 160 games, showing how important he was to the team. However, he also led the league in strikeouts. After this successful season, the Brewers decided not to offer him a new contract.
New York Yankees: A Short Stop
In 2017, Chris signed with the famous New York Yankees. He played for them for a few months, hitting eight home runs. He was later released by the team in July 2017.
Baseball Adventures in Mexico
After his time with the Yankees, Chris played in the minor leagues again for the Oakland Athletics and the Los Angeles Angels and Minnesota Twins.
In 2019, Chris joined the Acereros de Monclova in the Mexican League. He had an amazing year there! He led the league in home runs with 49 and RBIs with 119. Chris returned to the Acereros de Monclova in early 2024. Later in 2024, he was traded back to the Pericos de Puebla. In September 2024, he was traded back to Monclova, and then in January 2025, he was traded to the Piratas de Campeche.
