Early Life and High School Basketball
Chris Copeland was born in Orange, New Jersey in 1984. He looked up to his older brother, Vincent Alphaquan, who was also a talented basketball player. From a young age, Chris practiced basketball with Vincent as his coach. They would work on dribbling drills in a small alleyway next to their house.
In August 1999, when Chris was 15, he visited his aunt in Richmond, Virginia. By chance, he ended up in the gym at Hermitage High School where players were having practice games. Chris, who was already 6 feet 6 inches tall, quickly caught the attention of the coaches.
After this meeting, Chris and his mother decided to move from New Jersey to Virginia. Chris enrolled at Hermitage High School. In his senior year (2001–02), he was a star player. He scored about 15 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and blocked 3.7 shots per game. He was named Most Valuable Player and helped Hermitage win the Colonial District Championship twice.
