Christopher Charles Cuomo (born August 9, 1970) is an American television journalist. He is currently an anchor at NewsNation in New York City. Before that, he worked for ABC News and CNN. At CNN, he hosted the morning show New Day and later his own show, Cuomo Prime Time.
Cuomo comes from a well-known political family. His father, Mario Cuomo, was the 52nd governor of New York. His brother, Andrew Cuomo, was the 56th governor of New York. In 2021, CNN fired Chris Cuomo. This happened after reports said he had helped his brother Andrew, who was facing accusations of wrongdoing that led him to leave his job as governor. Cuomo later joined NewsNation to host a new show.
Early Life and Schooling
Chris Cuomo was born in the borough of Queens in New York City. He is the youngest child of Mario Cuomo and Matilda Cuomo. His brother is Andrew Cuomo. Both of his parents were of Italian heritage.
Cuomo went to private schools in New York. After high school, he attended Yale University. He later went to Fordham University School of Law and earned a law degree in 1995. He is a licensed attorney, which means he is qualified to practice law.
Career in Journalism
Cuomo's first jobs in journalism were on channels like CNBC, MSNBC, and CNN. He also worked as a correspondent for Fox News. The chairman of Fox News at the time, Roger Ailes, called Cuomo "fearless."
Working at ABC News
Cuomo joined ABC News and became a co-anchor of the show 20/20. He reported on many important topics, like the earthquake in Haiti and the problem of bullying. His work often led to positive changes. For example, an investigation he did on for-profit schools led to new rules for the industry.
From 2006 to 2009, Cuomo was the news anchor for Good Morning America. He reported on major news stories from all over the world. He was sent to countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq to cover the war on terrorism. In the United States, he reported on sad events like the Virginia Tech shooting. He also covered natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina.
Move to CNN
In 2013, Cuomo moved to CNN to co-host the morning show New Day. In 2018, CNN gave him his own show in the evening called Cuomo Prime Time.
In September 2018, he also started a weekday radio show on SiriusXM called "Let's Get After It."
Heated Argument in Public
In August 2019, a man in New York called Cuomo "Fredo." This is the name of a character from The Godfather books and movies who is seen as weak. Cuomo became very angry and got into a heated argument with the man.
Cuomo said that for Italian-Americans, being called "Fredo" was a serious insult. The event was filmed and caused a lot of discussion online. Cuomo later apologized for his reaction. He said he should have behaved better.
Leaving CNN
In 2021, Chris Cuomo's brother, Andrew Cuomo, was the governor of New York. He faced serious accusations of inappropriate behavior, which led him to resign.
News reports later showed that Chris had used his job as a journalist to help his brother. He gave his brother advice and used his media connections to get information about the situation. CNN said this was inappropriate for a journalist and a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest is when a person's private loyalties could affect their professional duties.
First, CNN suspended Cuomo in November 2021. Then, on December 4, 2021, the network fired him. Cuomo said he was embarrassed by the situation but that he understood why people were upset.
After being fired, Cuomo announced he would also leave his radio show on SiriusXM. The company that was going to publish his book also decided not to release it.
Joining NewsNation
In July 2022, Cuomo announced he would be hosting a new show on the channel NewsNation. The show, called Cuomo, started in October 2022.
On his first show, Cuomo said he had "learned lessons good and bad" from his experience. He said his new program would try to be neutral and not take sides in politics.
Personal Life
In 2001, Cuomo married Cristina Greeven, who was an editor for Gotham magazine. They live in Manhattan and have three children.
On March 31, 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuomo announced that he had tested positive for the virus. He broadcast his TV show from his home while he was in quarantine. In 2024, Cuomo said he has had health issues from long COVID since his illness.
Awards and Recognition
Cuomo has received many awards for his journalism. He won a News Emmy Award for a story about a young poet named Mattie Stepanek. This made him one of the youngest journalists to win the award.
He has also won Polk and Peabody Awards as part of a team. His work has been honored for reporting on breaking news, business, and legal topics.
