Chris Gascoyne, born on January 31, 1968, is a talented English actor. He has worked in movies, theatre, and television. He is most famous for playing the character Peter Barlow in the popular TV show Coronation Street. Chris first appeared on the show in December 2000. This was during a special live episode celebrating the show's 40th birthday.

Chris Gascoyne's Early Life

Chris Gascoyne was born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. He grew up in a family where both of his grandfathers worked in mines. His father, Derrik, was a greengrocer and florist. Later, his dad became a milkman.

Chris also spent a lot of his childhood in Gateshead. He lived there with his mother and grandparents. He was very close to his grandfather, Tom, and his Irish grandmother, Kitty. Later, his grandparents moved to live with his family. This happened after his grandmother started showing signs of dementia. His grandfather's health was also getting worse.

As a teenager, Chris joined the Central Workshop in Nottingham. This helped him get into the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He studied there from 1989 to 1992. While he was a student, he worked to earn money. He stacked shelves at a supermarket and delivered pizzas in Hammersmith.

Chris Gascoyne's Acting Career

Chris Gascoyne started his acting journey at the Central Workshop when he was just 15. He appeared in TV shows like The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole and The Bill.

One of his first roles was Judd in a children's show called Murphy's Mob. He also acted in the TV series Starting Out in 1988. Since then, Chris has been in many TV dramas. He acted alongside Warren Clarke in The Locksmith. He also worked with Timothy Spall in The Thing About Vince. Chris also had roles in Between the Lines. He appeared in Murdoch Mysteries and Casualty. He also played Fusilier Tony Rossi in Soldier Soldier. In movies, Chris played a New York Cop in My Last Five Girlfriends.

Playing Peter Barlow in Coronation Street

Chris Gascoyne became the seventh actor to play Peter Barlow in Coronation Street. His first time on the show was from 2000 to 2003. He then made a short return in 2007. During his break from Coronation Street after 2003, Chris joined the BBC drama New Street Law in 2006.

He came back to Coronation Street for good in October 2008. Chris took a four-month break in July 2012. He then left the show in November 2014. He returned briefly in 2015 after his co-star Anne Kirkbride passed away. Chris said coming back felt like a "healing process." He returned to the show permanently in October 2016.

On July 10, 2023, ITV announced that Chris Gascoyne would be leaving Coronation Street. He had played Peter Barlow for 23 years. He decided to leave to work on other acting projects. He also wanted to spend more time with his family.

Chris Gascoyne's Theatre Work

Chris Gascoyne has also done a lot of work in theatre. He got his first professional theatre role at age 18. This was at the Nottingham Playhouse. After finishing drama school, he joined the Richard Ayre Company. He performed in The David Hare Trilogy at The National Theatre.

He appeared twice at The Royal Court Theatre. First, he played Patsy in David Storey's The Changing Room. Then, he played the main role of Jimmy in Simon Stephens' play Bluebird. Chris also played the lead in a new play called The Ribcage. This was at The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester.

More recently, Chris played Ray Say in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. He also played Clov in Samuel Beckett's Endgame. He acted alongside his Coronation Street co-star, David Nielson. Chris believes that "Beckett is for everyone."

Chris Gascoyne married Caroline Harding in 2003. They have three children together.
