Chris Robshaw, born on June 4, 1986, is a former English rugby union player. He was the captain of the England national rugby union team for several years. Chris played in the back row of the scrum, often as a flanker.

Chris Robshaw's Early Life and Family

Chris Robshaw was the second of three boys. When he was five years old, his father passed away. His mother, Patricia, raised Chris and his brothers by herself.

Chris started playing rugby when he was seven years old. He played for Warlingham RFC. He went to Cumnor House School, then Millfield Preparatory School, and finally Millfield public school. At Millfield, he was the captain of the first team.

Chris married his girlfriend, Camilla Kerslake, in France on June 29, 2018. They had been together for six years before getting married. Their first child was born in May 2021.

Chris Robshaw's Club Rugby Career

Chris Robshaw played for two main rugby clubs during his career.

Playing for Harlequins Rugby Club

Chris made his first appearance in the Premiership in the 2007–2008 season. This was a big step in his professional career. He also joined the England Saxons squad, which won the Churchill Cup in 2008.

From the 2014–15 season, Chris was the vice-captain for the Harlequins club in London. He later gave up the captaincy to Joe Marler. This allowed him to focus more on his role as captain of the England national team.

Chris won the Aviva Premiership Player of the Year award twice. He first won it after the 2008–09 season. He won it again after Harlequins won the championship in the 2011–12 season. In that final game against Leicester Tigers, Chris scored a try for Harlequins. He stayed with Harlequins until the end of the 2019–20 season.

Playing for San Diego Legion

After his time with Harlequins, Chris joined San Diego Legion. This team plays in Major League Rugby in the United States. He played for them during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Chris Robshaw announced his retirement from rugby on October 21, 2022.

Chris Robshaw's International Rugby Career

Chris Robshaw played for England's national rugby teams at different levels.

Early International Appearances

In January 2004, Chris played for England Schools Under 18. He then made his debut for the First XV team during the 2005–2006 season. He scored two tries in a big win against Pertemps Bees.

He was also part of the England Under 21 squad. This team played in the 2006 Six Nations Championship and the 2006 Under 21 Rugby World Championship.

In 2008, rugby expert Will Greenwood said that Chris was playing well enough for the national team. He even compared Chris to World Cup-winning player Richard Hill.

Becoming England Captain

Chris was chosen for the England squad in May 2009. He played in a game against the Barbarians. He later earned his first official cap in a Test match against Argentina.

In January 2012, Chris Robshaw was named England captain. This was a big surprise because he had only played one game for England before. He led England throughout the 2012 Six Nations tournament. England won all their away games against Scotland, Italy, and France. They also beat Ireland at Twickenham. They only lost narrowly to Wales, who won the Grand Slam that year.

Chris continued to captain England in their series against South Africa. He played two games before breaking his thumb. Later in 2012, he led England to a famous victory against New Zealand.

Scoring Tries for England

Chris scored his first try for England on November 2, 2013. This was in a 20–13 win against Australia. His second try was against Italy on March 15, 2014. England won that game 52–11 in the 2014 RBS Six Nations.

2015 Rugby World Cup and Beyond

Chris remained captain for the 2015 Six Nations Championship. He played every minute of England's games. He was praised for his leadership, especially in the opening game against Wales. England won that game 21–16, and Chris made an amazing 26 tackles. England finished second in the championship for the fourth time in a row.

After England's performance at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Chris lost his captaincy in January 2016. Dylan Hartley became the new captain. However, Chris still played for England, moving to the blindside flanker position. England won the Grand Slam in 2016. They then toured Australia and won all three games against the Wallabies. Chris earned his 50th cap and was named Man of the Match in the second game.

Chris continued to be an important player for England under coach Eddie Jones. He missed the 2017 Six Nations due to injury. However, he was part of the team that toured Argentina in 2017 and won the series 2-0. He captained England for the last time in a win against Samoa in 2017. Chris played his final game for England in 2018, in a winning match against South Africa.

Injuries and new talented players like Mark Wilson, Tom Curry, and Sam Underhill meant Chris was no longer part of the team by the time of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Chris Robshaw started all 66 of his international games for England. Only Rory Underwood and Will Carling started more games without ever coming off the bench. He is also second only to Will Carling for the most appearances as England captain.

Barbarians vs. England Match Cancellation

Chris Robshaw was chosen to play for the Barbarians team against England on October 25, 2020. This was a warm-up match before the Six Nations season continued.

However, 12 players from the Barbarians squad, including Chris, broke COVID-19 rules. Even after trying to replace these players, another rule-breaking incident happened. This led to the game being completely cancelled.
