Christ Church is a beautiful old church located in Clevedon, a town in the English county of Somerset. It was built a long time ago, between 1838 and 1839. The original designers were Richard Charles Hussey and Thomas Rickman. Later, in the 1850s, the church was updated by George Phillips Manners and John Elkington Gill.

This church is very special because it is a Grade II* listed building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected. It has special architectural or historical interest.

History of Christ Church

Building the Church

The town of Clevedon was growing quickly in the 1830s. More people meant there was a need for a new church. The money to build Christ Church came from "public subscription." This means many people donated money to help pay for it.

Two architects, Richard Charles Hussey and Thomas Rickman, created the plans for the church. A generous person named George Weare Braikenridge gave a large amount of money, £1800. He also donated a very old and beautiful stained glass window. This window was from the 14th century and showed a picture called the "Tree of Jesse." Stained glass windows are made of many small pieces of colored glass. They often tell stories or show religious scenes.

Church Community

Christ Church is part of a larger church community, or "benefice." This group also includes St Andrew's and St Peter's churches. They all belong to the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is a large area managed by a bishop in the Church of England.

Architecture and Design

Key Features of the Church

Christ Church is built from limestone, a type of rock. It has a main hall called a nave with six sections, or "bays." It also has a chancel, which is the area near the altar.

On the south-west side, there is a tall tower with strong supports called buttresses. These supports help the walls stand strong.

Tower Details

The top of the tower has a special design. It has an embattled parapet, which looks like the top of a castle wall. There are also decorative pointy parts called crocketed pinnacles. These fancy additions were put on during the updates in the 1850s by George Phillips Manners and John Elkington Gill.
