History of Christ Church Fulwood
Christ Church was built on a piece of land called "Round Stubbing." A generous woman named Phoebe Silcock from Whiteley Wood Hall donated the land. She also gave £2,200 to help build the church. Local farmers helped by moving the stone for free.
The first stone was laid on August 16, 1837. The church was officially opened in 1839. At that time, the Fulwood area became its own church parish. This parish was very large, covering 19 square miles. It included big areas of moorland stretching out to Stanage Edge and Ringinglow.
The church was first built by R. Potter. Over the years, new parts were added. In 1953, a south aisle was built, and the east end of the church was made longer. A new room for the clergy (vestry) and choir was also added. In 1981, a north aisle, a gallery, and stairs were built.
Because of its history and design, Christ Church became a Grade II listed building on June 28, 1973. This means it is an important building that needs to be protected.
Phoebe Silcock also donated the land for the first house for the vicar (the vicarage). People in the community helped pay for the building of the vicarage in 1839. Her kindness was remembered in the church's first east window. Today, a special copper plaque near the pulpit remembers Phoebe Silcock as the person who founded the church.
