History of Christ Church Fulwood
Christ Church, Fulwood, was built on a piece of land called "Round Stubbing." A generous person named Phoebe Silcock from Whiteley Wood Hall donated the land. She also gave £2,200 to help build the church. Local farmers helped by moving the stone for free.
Building the Church
The first stone was placed on August 16, 1837, by Reverend W. V. Bagshawe. The church was originally built by R. Potter. In 1953, a new section called a south aisle was added. The east end and the area around the altar were also made larger. A new room for the clergy (vestry) and choir was added too.
Later, in 1981, more parts were added. These included a north aisle, a gallery on the north side, and new stairs. The church became a Grade II listed building on June 28, 1973. This means it is an important historical building.
The First Vicarage
Phoebe Silcock also donated the land for the first house for the vicar (the church's leader). This house, called the Vicarage, was built in 1839. People in the community helped pay for its construction. Phoebe Silcock's kindness was remembered in the church's first stained-glass window. This window showed acts of charity. It was moved during the 1953 expansion. Now, a special plaque near the pulpit remembers her as the church's founder.
