Christ Church is a special building located in the Kensington area of Liverpool, a big city in Merseyside, England. It's not just any building; it's officially recognized as a Grade II listed building. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

History of Christ Church

Christ Church was built in 1870. It was designed by architects named W. & G. Audsley. The building was first used as an Anglican parish church, which is a church for a local community.

In 1975, the church stopped being used by the Anglican community. For a while, it was used to store things. Then, in 2002, it opened its doors again for people to worship. Since 2018, the building has been used by the Christian Gold House Chapel. You might have even seen them on Channel 5!

In 2022, Christ Church was added to Historic England's "at risk" register. This means the building needs special attention to make sure it stays in good condition for the future.

A Look Inside and Out

Christ Church has a unique design. It's built in a style called North Italian Romanesque. This means it looks a bit like old Roman buildings. It's made from common bricks, but it also has colorful patterns. These patterns use red and blue bricks and stone, both inside and outside the building.

The church has a tall tower on its northwest side. This tower stands almost by itself. It used to have a pointy, pyramid-shaped roof. Most of the windows in the church are round at the top. However, there's one very large round window at the west end of the building.

Inside Christ Church, you'll see rows of arches. These are called arcades. They have round arches that rest on strong granite pillars, which are called piers. The tops of these pillars, called capitals, have designs inspired by Byzantine art.

Most of the original church furniture has been removed. But one special piece remains: the reredos. This is a decorated screen behind the altar, and it also has an arcade design. You can still see small pieces of the beautiful stained glass windows that the Audsley architects designed.
