Christ Church is a special building located in the Kensington area of Liverpool, a big city in Merseyside, England. It's officially recognized as a Grade II listed building, which means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected.

A Look Back: History of Christ Church

Christ Church was built a long time ago, in 1870. It was designed by architects named W. & G. Audsley. The church first opened as an Anglican parish church, which is a local church for a specific area.

In 1975, the church stopped being used for Anglican services. For a while, it was used to store things. But in 2002, it opened its doors again for worship. Since then, different Christian groups have used the building for their services.

In 2022, Christ Church was added to Historic England's "at risk" register. This means the building needs special attention to make sure it stays in good condition for the future.

Building Style: Architecture of Christ Church

The church has a unique design called North Italian Romanesque style. It's built with common bricks, but it has colorful patterns using red and blue bricks and stone. You can see these patterns both inside and outside the building.

One of its cool features is a tall tower on the northwest side. It looks almost separate from the main building. All the windows in the church are rounded at the top, except for a big round window at the west end.

Inside, the church has arcades, which are rows of arches. These arches are also rounded and are supported by strong granite piers (like thick columns). The tops of these piers have special carvings called capitals that are in a Byzantine style.

Most of the original church furniture has been removed. However, the reredos (a decorated screen behind the altar) is still there. It also has a design with arches. You can also still see some small pieces of the original stained glass windows designed by the Audsley architects.
