About Kensington
Kensington is mostly filled with beautiful old houses. These are called Victorian terraced houses. They were built a long time ago during the Victorian era.
You can find many local shops along Kensington, Prescot Road, and Edge Lane. These are the three main roads in the area. There are newsagents, convenience stores, and even some supermarkets. Many shop fronts have been improved. This was done with help from a government program called the New Deal for Communities. Kensington also has several traditional Liverpool pubs.
The area is home to the historic Deane Road Jewish Cemetery. This old cemetery received a large grant in 2010. The money helped with its restoration and care.
A Popular Student Area
Kensington is very close to Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter. This is an area with many universities and research centers. Because of this, Kensington has become a popular place for students to live. Many students from the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University live here. In 2001, about 12% of the people living in Kensington were registered students.
The Beatles Connection
In the northwestern part of Kensington, you'll find some special streets. These streets were named after the Beatles! They were opened in the early 1980s. Some of the names include John Lennon Drive, Paul McCartney Way, George Harrison Close, and Ringo Starr Drive. There are also Epstein Court, Apple Court, and Cavern Court.
Newsham Park
Kensington is also home to Newsham Park. This is a historic park that opened in 1868. It is a Grade II listed park, which means it's an important historical site. Newsham Park is one of three famous parks in Liverpool. The other two are Sefton Park and Stanley Park. Three of the five entrances to Newsham Park are in Kensington. These include the main entrance on Sheil Road. The other two are on Prescot Road.
Community Improvements
Since the year 2000, Kensington has seen many improvements. This is thanks to the Kensington Regeneration program. This program has helped redevelop old houses. It has also put street monitors in place to help keep the area safe and orderly.
A project called Kensington Vision ran from 2005 to 2006. It was funded by Mersey Broadband. Liverpool John Moores University helped to organize it. The project gave away free broadband internet connections. It also provided internet-enabled Freeview boxes. This helped the community get online. The project also created a community website. It trained local people in web design and video editing skills.
Getting Around
Kensington has good public transport. There are regular buses that connect the area to the city centre. These are bus numbers 8, 9, 10, and their variations. The buses also provide services to nearby towns like Huyton and St Helens.
