Discovering Christ Church's History
The Christ Church building was finished in 1898. It was designed by a famous architect named Henry Vaughan.
What Makes the Building Special?
The church is known for its beautiful Gothic architecture. This style uses pointed arches, tall spires, and large windows. Its location near downtown New Haven makes it a well-known landmark. The stone tower of the church looks like the tower of Magdalen College, Oxford in England.
Henry Vaughan himself picked the artists who created the amazing inside of the church.
- A talented wood carver from Bavaria, Johannes Kirchmayer, made the detailed wood carvings. You can see these especially on the rood screen, which is a screen that separates parts of the church.
- The colorful stained glass windows were made by the well-known company C.E. Kempe in London. There's a very large window at the back of the church above the baptismal font, where baptisms take place.
- The main altar has large stone figures and a carved stone screen called a reredos. This screen was inspired by similar ones in famous cathedrals in England, like Winchester Cathedral and St. Alban's.
Worship and Community at Christ Church
Christ Church is known for its special services and community activities.
- The Solemn High Mass is held on Sundays at 11:00 AM. It's famous for its beautiful choir music and traditional worship style.
- Compline is a quiet evening prayer service sung at 9:00 PM from September to May. Many people, both young and old, come to this service from New Haven and nearby towns, including students from Yale University.
Christ Church is also home to the North American office of the Society of Catholic Priests. This is a group of clergy (church leaders) within the Episcopal Church who follow the Anglo-Catholic tradition.
