About Christ Church New Haven

Christ Church is a beautiful and historic building in New Haven. It's known for its unique style of worship and its strong connection to the community. The church helps people in the city and offers many programs.

What is Anglo-Catholic Worship?

Anglo-Catholic worship is a style within the Episcopal Church. It uses many traditions and ceremonies that are similar to those found in the Roman Catholic Church. This includes special clothing for priests, incense, and beautiful music. It's a very traditional and respectful way to worship.

History of the Church Building

The Christ Church building was finished in 1898. It was designed by a famous architect named Henry Vaughan. He was known for creating amazing buildings.

Gothic Architecture and Design

The church is famous for its beautiful Gothic architecture. This style uses tall arches, pointed windows, and detailed stone carvings. It makes the building look grand and impressive. Its tall stone tower looks like the tower of Magdalen College in Oxford, England.

Henry Vaughan carefully chose the artists who created the church's stunning inside. A talented wood carver named Johannes Kirchmayer made the detailed wood carvings. You can see his work especially on the rood screen, which is a decorative screen separating parts of the church.

The colorful stained glass windows were made by a well-known company in London, C.E. Kempe. There's a large window at the back of the church above the baptismal font. The main altar has large stone figures and a carved stone screen called a reredos. This screen was inspired by similar ones in famous English cathedrals.

Music and Community at Christ Church

Christ Church is well-known for its amazing music. The church's main Sunday service, called the Solemn High Mass, happens at 11:00 AM. It features beautiful choral music and a special way of worship.

Another popular service is Compline, which is sung at 9:00 PM from September to May. Many people, both young and old, come from New Haven and nearby towns to attend. Students from Yale University also enjoy this peaceful evening service.

The church is also home to the North American office of the Society of Catholic Priests. This group is for clergy (church leaders) in the Episcopal Church who follow the Anglo-Catholic traditions.
