Christian Wiyghan Tumi (15 October 1930 – 2 April 2021) was an important leader in the Catholic Church from Cameroon. He served as the archbishop of Douala from 1991 to 2009. Before that, he was the bishop of Yagoua and later the archbishop of Garoua. In 1988, he became a cardinal, which is a very high rank in the Catholic Church. Cardinal Tumi was the first person from Cameroon to become a cardinal.

Early Life and Education

Christian Tumi was born on October 15, 1930. His birthplace was Kikaikelaki, a small village near Kumbo in the Northwest Region of Cameroon. He went to school at local seminaries in Cameroon and Nigeria.

He also trained to be a teacher in Nigeria and London. Later, he studied theology at the Catholic University of Lyon in France. He then earned a special degree called a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.

Becoming a Priest

On April 17, 1966, Christian Tumi became a priest for the Diocese of Buéa. For a year, he worked as a Vicar in Soppo. After that, he became a professor at Bishop Rogan College's seminary. From 1969 to 1973, he studied abroad. When he returned, he was chosen to be the rector (head) of the seminary in Bambui.

On December 6, 1979, Christian Tumi was appointed as the very first bishop of the Diocese of Yagoua. He officially became a bishop on January 6, 1980. This special ceremony was led by Pope John Paul II himself.

Later, on November 19, 1982, he was named coadjutor archbishop of Garoua. This meant he would take over as archbishop when the current one retired. He became the Archbishop of Garoua on March 17, 1984.

Leading the Episcopal Conference

In 1982, he was chosen as the vice president of the National Episcopal Conference of Cameroon. This is a group of all the bishops in the country. In 1985, he became its president and held this important role until 1991.

Becoming a Cardinal

Pope John Paul II made him a cardinal on June 28, 1988. This was a huge honor for him and for Cameroon. As a cardinal, he was given the title of Santi Martiri dell'Uganda a Poggio Ameno.

On July 6, 1991, he became a member of the Pontifical Council for Dialogue with Non-Believers. This group works to build understanding with people of different faiths. On August 31, 1991, Cardinal Tumi was named the Archbishop of Douala.

Participating in Papal Elections

As a cardinal, Christian Tumi had the important job of helping to choose the next Pope. He was one of the cardinal electors who took part in the 2005 papal conclave. This was the meeting where Pope Benedict XVI was elected.

Advocacy and Public Life

Cardinal Tumi often spoke out about important issues in Cameroon. He believed in fairness and understanding between different groups of people in the country. He also led public demonstrations to support his beliefs and values.

In November 2020, Cardinal Tumi was briefly taken by a group of people. However, he was released unharmed the very next day.
