Christiane Endler (born July 23, 1991) is a famous Chilean professional footballer. She is known as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Christiane plays for the French club Lyon and used to play for teams like Colo-Colo, Valencia, and Paris Saint-Germain.

From 2019 to 2022, she was a top finalist for the Best Women's Goalkeeper award at the Best FIFA Football Awards. She won this big award in 2021, showing she is truly one of the best.

Early Life and First Steps in Football

Christiane Endler was born in Santiago, Chile. Her father was German, and her mother had Italian family. From a young age, Christiane loved sports. She played many different ones, like tennis, swimming, and basketball.

When she was 10, she joined her first football club. As a teenager, she went to a German high school where she started to get real football training. She used to play as a forward, scoring goals. But when she was 15, a coach saw her height and suggested she try being a goalkeeper. This change was a great idea! At 17, she started playing semi-professionally for Unión La Calera's women's team.

College Football Journey

In 2011, Christiane was asked to play college football in the United States. She joined the University of South Florida's team, the Bulls, on a scholarship. She studied Business Administration and learned English there.

In 2012, she played in all 19 games. She made 83 saves and had nine games where she didn't let any goals in. She was even named "Big East goalkeeper of the week" twice! In 2013, she continued to shine, making a career-high 87 saves. In 2014, she helped her team win a big conference championship.

During a short break in 2012, she briefly played for Colo-Colo in a tournament.

Club Career Highlights

Starting Out with Everton and Colo-Colo

In 2009, Christiane played in the very first Copa Libertadores Femenina tournament. The next year, in 2010, she reached her first Copa Libertadores final with Everton de Viña del Mar. Her team was the first Chilean women's team to reach such a big final. Even though they lost 1-0, Christiane played amazingly.

In 2011, she joined Colo-Colo. She played in her second Copa Libertadores final that year. In 2012, while still in college, she played in her third final in a row. This time, the game went to penalty kicks. Christiane had practiced for this! She stopped the final penalty shot, winning her first Copa Libertadores title. This was a huge moment for women's football in Chile.

Time with Chelsea and Return to Chile

In 2014, Christiane signed with Chelsea in England. She started well, but a knee injury stopped her season. Chelsea offered her a new contract, but she felt it wasn't enough to live in England. So, she returned to Chile for a year to find her love for football again.

She went back to Colo-Colo in 2015. There, she got her confidence back. She helped her team win a league title and reached her fourth Copa Libertadores final in 2015.

Success in Spain with Valencia

The next season, in 2016, she moved to Valencia in Spain. She had a fantastic season! Valencia let in the fewest goals in the league and finished third. Christiane won the "Zamora Trophy" for letting in only 11 goals all season. She was the first non-Spanish player to win this award. Fans also voted her into La Liga's team of the season.

Becoming a Star with PSG

Christiane's great performances caught the eye of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in France. In 2017, she signed a three-year contract. This was a big deal, as Valencia received money for her transfer. She quickly became a key player for PSG. In the 2017–18 season, PSG finished second in the league, and Christiane only let in five goals in 11 matches.

In 2018, Christiane played a huge role in PSG winning the Coupe de France Féminine final. She made amazing saves, helping PSG win 1-0. This win broke Lyon's long winning streak in that cup. By the end of the 2018-2019 season, she was voted the best goalkeeper in the French league.

She made her Champions League debut in 2018. Her team reached the quarterfinals, but lost to her former club, Chelsea. For her great play with PSG and Chile, she was a top nominee for the 2019 FIFA Goalkeeper awards.

The 2020-21 season was incredible for Christiane and PSG. They went undefeated, winning 20 games and drawing 2. Christiane allowed only 4 goals all season! PSG won their first-ever French league title, ending Lyon's 14-year winning streak. After this huge win, Christiane announced she would leave PSG. In January 2022, she was named the 2021 Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper.

Winning Big with Lyon

On June 21, 2021, Christiane joined Lyon, another top French club. With Christiane as their goalkeeper, Lyon won the 2022 UEFA Women's Champions League Final by beating Barcelona 3–1. This made her the first Chilean player ever to win the Women's Champions League!

Playing for Chile

Youth National Teams

Christiane played for Chile's youth teams. In 2008, she was a regular starter in the U17 Copa America Femenina. Later that year, at 17, she played in the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup hosted in Chile. She played every minute of her team's games and impressed many people. She later said this tournament made her realize she could play football professionally.

In 2010, she had more success in the U20 Copa America Femenina. She helped her team reach the knockout rounds for the first time.

Senior National Team Challenges

Christiane made her debut for Chile's senior team in 2009, when she was 18. At the 2010 Copa America, Chile finished third, their best result in years. Christiane was named "goalkeeper of the tournament."

However, the Chilean football federation sometimes didn't support the women's team well. There were times when the team didn't have official games, and their FIFA ranking dropped. Christiane and other players felt the team was neglected.

Fighting for Change: ANJUFF

In 2016, Christiane and other Chilean players created ANJUFF (Asociación Nacional de Jugadoras de Fútbol). This was a union for Chilean women footballers. They wanted to fight for better support from their federation. ANJUFF was one of the first efforts to create a union for female athletes in Latin America. Thanks to their efforts, Chile's team started playing competitive matches again in 2017.

In September 2019, Christiane won her first title with Chile in a friendly tournament. They drew with Brazil and won on penalty kicks. Christiane saved one penalty and didn't let in any goals during the whole tournament.

On April 13, 2021, Chile qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for the first time! Christiane was the captain for this historic event.

In 2023, she played in the Pan American Games, where Chile won a silver medal. After the semi-final match, she announced she was retiring from the national team.
