Joseph Christopher Glenn was an American news journalist. He worked in radio and television for over 45 years. He spent 35 of those years at CBS, a major news company. He retired in 2006 when he was 68 years old.

Early Life and Education

Joseph Glenn was born in Queens, New York City. He studied English at the University of Colorado Boulder. In 1960, he served in the United States Army. During this time, he also worked for the American Forces Network. This was how he started his career in broadcasting.

A Career in News

Glenn worked at various radio stations before joining CBS in 1971. These stations were in New York, Connecticut, and Washington, D.C.. At CBS, he took on many different roles in their news team.

Reporting for Kids

One of his well-known roles was as a narrator for In the News. This was a popular TV news program for children and young people. It won an Emmy Award and aired between Saturday morning cartoons. Glenn also appeared on camera for 30 Minutes. This show was a version of 60 Minutes made for young people.

Radio News Anchor

Glenn was also a main anchor for CBS News Radio. He hosted two important news shows. From 1988 to 1999, he anchored The World Tonight. This show is now called the CBS World News Roundup Late Edition. From 1999 until his retirement, he hosted the morning CBS World News Roundup. His last morning broadcast was on February 23, 2006.

From 1982 to 1984, Glenn was a TV news anchor. He worked on CBS News Nightwatch. This show aired very early in the morning on weekdays.

Challenger Disaster Coverage

Joseph Glenn made one of his most famous reports on January 28, 1986. He was anchoring CBS News Radio's live coverage of the Space Shuttle Challenger launch. Glenn had just finished his report, thinking it was a normal launch. But then, the shuttle broke apart. All seven astronauts on board died.

"I had to get back on the air real fast to describe that," he remembered. "And had a very difficult time doing that." Glenn and reporter Frank Mottek continued to cover the disaster. They reported it as a special CBS NetAlert bulletin.

Technology in News

Glenn was one of the first CBS News reporters to use a personal computer. He used an Apple II computer. He also continued to use older sound equipment for his newscasts. He played sound clips from special "carts." This was long after most of the news industry had switched to newer computer systems.

Personal Life

Joseph Glenn married Dianne West in 1960. They had two daughters together.

Death and Legacy

Joseph Glenn passed away suddenly on October 17, 2006. He was 68 years old. He died in Norwalk, Connecticut. Glenn had been battling liver cancer. After his death, he was honored. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in Chicago on November 4.
