Christopher Campbell Oldfield (born October 30, 1838 – died May 14, 1916) was an English soldier and a talented first-class cricketer. He was also a Justice of the Peace, which means he was a local judge.
Early Life
Christopher Oldfield was born in October 1838 in Patna, which was part of British India at the time. His father, William (or Henry) Swann Oldfield, worked for the Bengal Civil Service. Christopher later moved to England for his education. He studied at Exeter College, Oxford, a famous university.
Military Service
In December 1859, Christopher joined the British Army. He started as an Ensign in the 10th Foot Regiment. An Ensign was a junior officer who carried the regiment's flag. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1863.
By 1867, he was serving with the 85th Foot Regiment. He became a Captain in August 1867. In 1873, he was with the 38th Foot Regiment. He retired from active duty in November 1873. After that, he joined the Royal Berkshire Militia, a reserve military force, and served there until 1877.
Cricket Career
Christopher Oldfield was a good cricketer. He played in four first-class matches during his career.
His first big game was in 1864. He played for the Gentlemen of Kent team against the Gentlemen of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). This match took place during the famous Canterbury Cricket Week.
In 1865, he played two more first-class matches. First, he played for the Gentlemen of England against the Gentlemen of Middlesex. Then, he played for the Gentlemen of the MCC against the Gentlemen of Kent again.
From 1866, Christopher was stationed in Ireland. He continued to play cricket there, including some non-first-class games for the Irish team until 1871.
His last first-class match was in 1873. He played for the Gentlemen of the MCC one more time, this time against Kent County Cricket Club.
Later Life
Christopher Oldfield was also involved in public service. He worked for the East India Company, which was a powerful trading company. He also served as a Justice of the Peace, helping with local law and order.
He passed away in May 1916 in Westminster, London, England. He had three children with his wife, Edith Frances Sheridan Guinness.
