Chromolaena frustrata is a special plant with a long name! Most people call it the Cape Sable false thoroughwort or Cape Sable thoroughwort. It's a rare type of flowering shrub (a small, bushy plant) that grows in North America. This plant is part of the sunflower family, just like sunflowers!
About the Cape Sable False Thoroughwort
The Cape Sable false thoroughwort is a very unique plant. It's considered rare because it doesn't grow in many places. Scientists gave it the name Chromolaena frustrata. This plant is a perennial herb, which means it lives for more than two years. It comes back year after year, unlike plants that only live for one season.
Where It Lives
You can only find this plant in southern Florida. It grows in specific spots like the Florida Keys, which are a chain of islands. It also lives inside Everglades National Park, a famous natural area. This plant likes low-lying areas, usually less than 10 meters (about 33 feet) above sea level. It prefers coastal rock outcrops (rocky areas near the coast) and the edges of hammocks (small islands of trees). It needs places that haven't been disturbed by people.
What It Looks Like
The Cape Sable false thoroughwort is usually a small plant. It rarely grows taller than 25 centimeters (about 10 inches). Its flower heads grow in small groups, usually with 2 to 6 flowers together. These flowers are a pretty blue or lavender color. They have disc florets, which are the small, tube-shaped flowers in the center of a sunflower. However, unlike many sunflowers, this plant does not have ray florets, which are the petal-like flowers around the edge.
