Hsieh Hsin-ta (born December 6, 1946 – died May 15, 2017), known professionally as Chu Ke-liang, was a famous Taiwanese comedian, actor, TV host, and singer. He was well-known for his unique and bold style, including his special clothes and hairstyles, and his funny, often playful, jokes.
Early Life and Stage Name
Chu Ke-liang was born Hsieh Hsin-ta in Zuoying, Kaohsiung in Taiwan. When he was a teenager, he left home to follow his dream of working in theater. He learned from a teacher named Lin Sung-yen and became an actor and writer. However, he wasn't very famous yet.
Around age 30, he played a clown character named Zhū Gēliàng in a play about the legendary Liao Tianding. He was so good and popular in this role that he decided to use "Chu Ke-liang" as his stage name from then on.
Career Highlights
Becoming a Star
In 1980, Chu Ke-liang became very popular with his show called Chu Ke-liang Cabaret Show. In this show, he acted like a calm person but often used funny, sometimes cheeky, language. He would joke around with the guest singers and tell entertaining stories. Along with other big stars like Chang Fei, Frankie Kao, and Ni Min-jan, Chu was one of Taiwan's biggest TV personalities in the 1980s.
In 1994, Chu used his popularity to support James Soong when he was running to be the Governor of Taiwan province. Chu was Taiwan's most popular entertainer at the time, and his support helped Soong connect with many Taiwanese people.
A Time Away from the Spotlight
Chu faced some big financial challenges due to money problems. He had to step away from public life in 1995 to deal with these issues. He briefly returned in 1997 but then disappeared again in 1999.
Even though he was out of the public eye, people still remembered him. His old performances were available on video and sometimes shown on TV. This helped his fans not forget him. In 2009, reporters found him in a restaurant. He told them he was still struggling financially.
Many of his friends and fellow performers, like Chang Fei and Frankie Kao, encouraged him to come back to television and movies.
His Big Comeback
After being found by reporters, Chu Ke-liang announced his plans for a comeback in April 2009. He joked that he had been "studying abroad" for ten years. He said he always wanted to return but didn't have the courage until then.
He started a new variety show called Zhūgē Huìshè in July 2009. His return was a huge success! In 2010, he released his first music album, Dōngshānzàiqǐ. The same year, he won the Golden Bell Awards for Best Variety Show Host.
Chu also played a major role in the hit movie Night Market Hero in 2011. This movie really cemented his successful return to entertainment.
Living with Illness and Passing Away
In 2014, Chu Ke-liang was diagnosed with cancer. He was hesitant to get intensive treatments at first. However, in September 2016, his health worsened, and he decided to have surgery to remove the tumor. By then, his cancer had unfortunately reached an advanced stage.
After his surgery, he shared an important message: "I should have believed in evidence-based medicine two years ago." This meant he wished he had followed proven medical treatments sooner.
Chu Ke-liang passed away on May 15, 2017, at the age of 70, due to complications from his illness. A public funeral was held in June, attended by many people who admired him.
His Unique Look and Impact
Chu Ke-liang was famous for his very distinct look. He often wore a colorful jacket with a bowtie, but surprisingly, he paired it with bermuda shorts, black shoes, and white socks. His hairstyle was also very recognizable, often called a "toilet-lid haircut." It was similar to a bowl cut but covered his ears and reached his shoulders at the back.
Many people admired Chu Ke-liang, including fellow Taiwanese entertainer Show Lo, who has even copied his style.
