The Church of All Saints is an old church located in Lopen, Somerset, England. It was first built a very long time ago, in the 12th century. Today, it is recognized as a Grade II* listed building, which means it's a historically important structure.

A Look Back: The Church's History

This church began its life in the 12th and 13th centuries. That's over 800 years ago! However, much of what you see today was built later, during the 14th and 15th centuries.

In 1833, a new section called the north transept was added. A transept is like a "wing" that extends out from the main part of the church. Later, between 1874 and 1886, the church went through a big repair and update. This process is known as a Victorian restoration, named after the time of Queen Victoria.

The Church of All Saints is part of a larger group of churches. This group is called a benefice, and it includes churches from Merriott, Hinton, Dinnington, and Lopen. All these churches belong to the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is a major church area.

What the Church Looks Like

The Church of All Saints is built from a special local stone called hamstone. Its roofs are covered with slate. The church has a small bell turret on its roof, which holds two bells.

Inside, the church has a main area called a three-bay nave. It also has a two-bay chancel, which is the part of the church near the altar. These sections are supported by strong corner buttresses.

A gallery was added inside the church in the late 1700s or early 1800s. This gallery now holds the church organ. Most of the other things inside, like the pews and decorations, are from the 18th or 19th centuries. However, the font, which is used for baptisms, is much older, from the 13th century. You can also find many memorial slabs and tablets inside, remembering people from the past. A special display showing a part of the Lopen Roman Mosaic has also been placed in the church.
