Discovering the Church's Design
The Church of Our Father is a single-story building made of stone. It faces west, looking out onto Maine State Route 3 in Hulls Cove. This village is on the northeast side of Mount Desert Island.
What Makes the Church Special?
The front of the church has a large, pointed stained glass window. This window was made by the famous studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Above the window, at the very top of the roof, is an open bell tower. The corners of the church walls are supported by strong stone supports called buttresses.
The main door to the church is on the south side. It is covered by a small porch with a sloped roof. This porch has arched openings on its front and sides. There is also a round window, called a bullseye window, on the porch. The main roof of the church has small windows that stick out, called gabled dormers.
Inside the Church
Inside, the church walls are covered with wood panels. The rest of the walls and ceiling are made of plaster. You can see the wooden beams that support the ceiling. To the north side of the church, there is a newer wooden building. This building is a parish hall, which is a meeting place for the church community. Together, the church and the hall form an L-shape.
The Church's Story and History
The group of people who started the Church of Our Father began meeting in 1880. The church building itself was paid for by two sisters, Cornelia and Mary Prime. They wanted to honor their parents. They also gave the land for the church to be built on. Construction happened in 1890 and 1891.
Who Designed This Historic Church?
The church was designed by William Masters Carmac. He was an architect from Philadelphia who spent his summers in Bar Harbor. This church is the only one of his known designs in Maine that is still mostly the same as when it was built.
The Church of Our Father is one of at least five churches in coastal Maine designed by architects. These churches were all built in the late 1800s. The church is also known for its beautiful collection of stained glass windows. These windows were created by different famous glass artists. They were installed between 1898 and 1932.
