The Church of San Juan de Berbío
A Look Back in Time
The Church of San Juan de Berbío likely started as part of a monastery. This monastery was founded way back in 1005 by King Alfonso V. Later, in 1099, a princess named Infanta Doña Urraca gave the church to another important religious place, the Monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza.
Changes Through the Centuries
Over hundreds of years, the church was changed and updated many times. It had major redesigns in the 1400s and 1500s. The biggest changes happened in the 1700s. During this time, new parts were added, like square sections at the ends and decorative trim on the porch.
Even with all these changes, some parts of the original design from the Romanesque period (a style popular in Europe from the 6th to 13th centuries) still remain. You can still see the basic shape of the building. Also, the western front of the church has a double archway, called an archivolt, and other original decorations. For a long time, until 1892, this church served as the main parish church for the town of Infiesto.
A Difficult Period
Sadly, the Church of San Juan de Berbío faced a very tough time in 1936. During the Spanish Civil War, a conflict that took place in Spain, the church was badly damaged by fire. A beautiful altarpiece from the 1700s, which was a large decorated screen behind the altar, was also destroyed in the fire.
