The Church of San Juan de Berbío is a historic church in Infiesto, a town in Piloña, Asturias, Spain. It is believed to have started as part of a monastery. This monastery was founded in 1005 by King Alfonso V of León. Later, in 1099, a princess named Doña Urraca gave the church to the Monastery of San Pedro de Eslonza.
History of the Church
The Church of San Juan de Berbío has changed a lot over time. It was redesigned several times in the 1400s and 1500s. The biggest changes happened in the 1700s. During this time, new parts like square sections and porch decorations were added.
Original Romanesque Style
Even with all the changes, you can still see parts of the church's original Romanesque design. The basic shape of the building is from that time. Also, the western front of the church still has its double archway (called an archivolt) and some old decorations. These pieces show what the church looked like centuries ago.
Parish Church and Damage
Until 1892, the Church of San Juan de Berbío was the main parish church for Infiesto. This means it was the local church for the community. Sadly, in 1936, during a time of conflict in Spain, the church was badly damaged by fire. An important altarpiece from the 1700s was also destroyed in the fire.
