History of St James' Church
St James' Church was built a long time ago, between 1856 and 1858. It was designed by the well-known architect William Butterfield. A person named William Dawnay, 7th Viscount Downe asked for the church to be built.
The church is made from strong stone with a red tile roof. It has a special style called "High Victorian Gothic". The church has a tall tower on the west side, a large main area called a nave with side aisles, a small entrance porch on the south side, and a smaller section at the east end called a chancel.
The church grounds, including the churchyard, cover about 1.38 acres. The wall around the churchyard is also old and important, listed as a Grade II listed structure. This means it's a building of special interest. The church also has a special entrance gate called a lych gate, which is also a Grade I listed structure. The church itself was officially recognized as a Grade I listed building on May 26, 1971.
