The Church of St John the Baptist is an old church in Horsington, England. It belongs to the Church of England. The church was first built in the 1400s. Later, it was largely rebuilt between 1885 and 1887. This church is a very special building. It is a Grade II* listed building, which means it's historically important.

A Look Back in Time

The church was originally built in the 15th century, which is the 1400s. Some parts of the old church are still there from that time. For example, a wall in the main part of the church, called the nave, is from the 1400s. However, most of the church was rebuilt much later. This big rebuilding project happened in the 1880s. It was part of a common trend called a Victorian restoration. During this time, many old churches were updated and repaired.

In 2015, the church got some modern updates. Part of its floor was replaced. They also added a new toilet and a small kitchen area. This area is called a servery.

The church is part of a group of churches. This group includes churches in Abbas and Templecombe, Henstridge, and Horsington. They all belong to the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

What the Church Looks Like

The church building is made of stone. It has special stone decorations called hamstone dressings. The roofs are covered with clay tiles. The main part of the church, the nave, has five sections. The area near the altar, called the chancel, has three sections. There is also a side area on the south side, known as an aisle.

The tall tower at the west end of the church is supported by strong corner buttresses. The very top part of the tower was added in 1738. The lower parts of the tower are much older, from the 15th and 16th centuries.

Inside the church, you can see an eight-sided font. This font is used for baptisms and is from around the year 1400. However, most of the inside of the church looks like it was built in the 1800s. This includes a beautiful stained glass window. This window was made by an artist named Charles Eamer Kempe.
