The Church of St John the Baptist is a beautiful old church in a village called Horsington, in Somerset, England. It was first built a long time ago in the 1400s. Later, it was rebuilt and made new between 1885 and 1887. This church is considered a special historic building. It is known as a Grade II* listed building, which means it's very important and protected.
A Look Back in Time
The Church of St John the Baptist was originally built in the 15th century, which means the 1400s. Some parts of the old church, like a wall in the main area (called the nave), are still there from that time. However, most of the church was rebuilt during the 1880s. This big rebuilding project is often called a "Victorian restoration."
Modern Updates
More recently, in 2015, the church had some important updates. Part of the floor was replaced. New facilities like a toilet and a small kitchen area (called a servery) were added. These changes help make the church more comfortable for everyone who visits today.
Church Design and Features
The church building is made of stone. It has special decorative parts made from a type of stone called hamstone. The roofs are covered with clay tiles.
Inside the Church
The main part of the church, the nave, has five sections. The area near the altar, called the chancel, has three sections. There is also a side area on the south side. The tall tower at the west end of the church is supported by strong corner supports called buttresses. The very top part of the tower was added in 1738. The lower parts of the tower are much older, from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Inside, you can find an eight-sided font that is about 600 years old, from around 1400. However, most of the inside of the church looks like it was designed in the 1800s. This includes a beautiful stained glass window created by an artist named Charles Eamer Kempe.
