History of St Lawrence Church
People believe there was a church in Mickleton as early as 960 AD. But the church you see today started being built in the 1100s.
Over the years, the church grew bigger.
- In the 1200s or 1300s, the main part of the church, called the nave, was made longer.
- In the 1300s, the tall tower was added.
Later, in 1868, the church was updated. This was part of a big "Victorian restoration" project led by Frederick Preedy. During this time, many old churches were repaired and improved.
The church is part of the Diocese of Gloucester. This is a large area managed by the church.
Church Architecture and Features
The Church of St Lawrence is made of stone and has a tiled roof. It has many interesting features.
The Church Tower and Bells
The church tower holds eight bells. The oldest bells were made in 1668. That's over 350 years ago! In 1954, the bells were rehung in a new iron frame. This helps them ring clearly.
Sundial and Organ
Above the door of the south porch, there is a sundial. It has a Latin message carved into it. Inside, the church has an organ that was built in 1853. A special room for the organ, called the organ loft, was added in 1931.
Inside the Church
The church has a pulpit from the Jacobean period. This means it was made in the early 1600s. The font, where baptisms take place, is even older, from the 1400s. Most of the colorful stained glass windows were added in the 1800s.
Memorials and Plaques
You can find special memorials inside the church.
- One memorial remembers a woman named Utrecia Smith. She was the daughter of a church leader and schoolmaster in Mickleton. Utrecia passed away in 1744 when she was 30 years old.
- There is also a plaque that honors the people from the village who died in World War I.
