The Church of St Mary and St John is a very old church located in Lamyatt, a village in Somerset, England. It was built a long time ago, in the 13th century, which means it's over 700 years old! This church is considered a special and important building. It is known as a Grade II* listed building. This means it is protected because of its history and unique architecture.
A Look at the Church's History
The Church of St Mary and St John has a long and interesting past. From the 1100s until a big historical event called the Dissolution of the Monasteries, a group of nuns from Godstow Nunnery had special rights over the church. The Dissolution of the Monasteries happened in the 1500s. During this time, many monasteries and convents in England were closed down.
Over hundreds of years, the church building has been changed and fixed up many times. However, the original tower, which was built in the 1200s, is still standing today. It is a two-stage tower, meaning it has two main sections.
Special Features Inside
One of the beautiful features inside the church is a stained glass window. This window shows a picture of St Christopher carrying the Christ child. It was given to the church by a person named Christopher Welch in 1907.
