This church has stood for hundreds of years in the English countryside. It has seen many changes over time. The building is a key part of the history of Lamyatt village.
A Look at Its Long History
The Church of St Mary and St John has a fascinating past. From the 1100s until the 1500s, the church was connected to a place called Godstow nunnery. A nunnery was a special community where nuns (women who dedicate their lives to religious service) lived and prayed.
During the 1500s, a big event called the Dissolution of the Monasteries happened in England. This was when King Henry VIII closed down many monasteries and nunneries, including Godstow.
Over the centuries, different parts of the church have been updated and repaired. However, a special part of the original building, its two-stage tower from the 13th century, is still standing today.
Special Features Inside
Inside the church, you can find some beautiful artwork. One notable feature is a stained glass window. This window shows a picture of St Christopher carrying the Christ child. It was given to the church by Christopher Welch in 1907. Stained glass windows are made of many pieces of colored glass, creating amazing pictures when light shines through them.
