The Anglican Church of St Michael and All Angels is a very old church located in Chaffcombe, a village in Somerset, England. It was first built a long time ago, in the 15th century. Today, it is known as a Grade II* listed building, which means it's a special historic place protected for its importance.
A Look Back in Time
The very first church in Chaffcombe was mentioned way back in the year 1187. That's over 800 years ago! The church you see today was mostly built in the 15th century. That means it's over 500 years old. The tall tower of the church is still from that original 15th-century building. However, most of the other parts of the church were rebuilt. This happened between 1857 and 1860. A person named James Mountford Allen was the architect who helped rebuild it. This church is part of a group of churches called the Two Shires benefice. This group is within the Diocese of Bath and Wells.
What the Church Looks Like
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is made of stone. It has special stone decorations called hamstone dressings. The roofs are covered with clay tiles. The church has a main open area called a nave and a smaller area near the altar called a chancel. The church tower has three levels. It is held up by strong supports called buttresses. Inside the tower, there are six bells that can be rung together. On the outside of the church, you can see several gargoyles. These are carved stone figures, often shaped like animals or monsters, that help drain water from the roof.
Inside the Church
When you go inside, you can see a copy of a famous painting. It's a copy of Madonna and Child by the artist Raphael. There is also a very old font inside. A font is a basin used for baptisms. This font is even older than the current church building. It is plain and stands on a round base.
