The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a very old church located in Gwernesney, a small place in Monmouthshire, Wales. It's a special building because it's considered a Grade I listed building. This means it's very important historically and architecturally. In 2017, a group called the Friends of Friendless Churches started looking after it.
A Look at Its History
This church is super old! It was first built way back in the 1200s (that's the thirteenth century). But then, a lot of changes and additions were made in the 1400s (the fifteenth century).
The church is made from a type of rock called Old Red Sandstone. In the mid-1800s, around 1853 and 1854, a person named John Pollard Seddon helped fix up parts of the church. He worked on the "double bell gable," which is the part of the roof where the bells hang.
What's Inside the Church?
Inside the church, you can find a special wooden screen from the late medieval period. This screen is very interesting to people who study old buildings.
The church also kept records of important events. For example, the book that lists baptisms (when someone is welcomed into the church) and burials (when someone is laid to rest) goes all the way back to 1758. The book for marriages started even earlier, in 1757.
