The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a beautiful old church located in Penselwood, a village in Somerset, England. It was built a very long time ago, in the 15th century. This church is so special that it's officially recognized as a Grade II* listed building, which means it's an important historical place.

A Look Back in Time

The main parts of the Church of St Michael and All Angels were built in the 1400s. Later, in the 1800s, it had a big makeover called a Victorian restoration. This means parts of the church were repaired and updated to look their best.

More recently, between 2006 and 2008, the church got a brand new roof. This helps keep the old building safe and dry. The church is part of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. This is like a large area managed by the church.

Church Design and Features

The church is made from stone and has stone slate roofs. Inside, it has a main area called a nave and a special area for the altar called a chancel. A side section, known as a north aisle, was added in 1848.

The Tower and Its Bells

The church has a tall west tower. This tower is supported by strong diagonal buttresses, which are like extra supports on the outside walls. It also has a cool hexagonal (six-sided) stair turret, which is a small tower with stairs inside.

The tower is home to six bells. Imagine how old they are! The oldest bell was made way back in 1520.

Special Sculptures and Old Fittings

Above the south door, there's a small carved space called a niche. Inside this niche, you can see a sculpture of the Virgin Mary with two kneeling figures. People believe this carving is from around 1400. It was brought to the church from Italy in the mid-1800s by the church leader at the time, Rev Samuel Marindin.

Most of the things inside the church, like the benches and decorations, are from the 1800s. However, there's a very old font that dates back to the 11th century. There's also a piscina from the 14th century, which is a special basin used for washing sacred vessels.
