About the Church of St Stephen

This church is part of the Church of England. It is made from stone and has roofs covered with slate. The church has a main area called a nave and a smaller area called a chancel. It also has a tall tower at the west end. This tower has three bells inside. You can see interesting carvings on the tower, like hunky punks and gargoyles.

Inside the Church

When you go inside the Church of St Stephen, you can see an old font. This is a special basin used for baptisms. It has eight sides and was made in the 17th century. There is also a hatchment from the year 1660. A hatchment is a special painting that shows a family's coat of arms. It is usually put up after someone important from that family has died.

A Glimpse into History

The Church of St Stephen has a long history. In the 12th century, it was connected to Bruton Priory, which was a type of monastery. For many years, from 1661 until 1976, members of the Leir family served as the church's rectors. A rector is the main priest in charge of a church.

In 1884, the church went through a big update called a Victorian restoration. During this time, the rector, Charles Edward Lier, made some changes. However, he did not get the necessary permissions from the bishop before starting the work. This caused some disagreements at the time.

The Church Today

Today, the Church of St Stephen is part of a larger group of churches. This group is called a benefice. It includes the churches in Charlton Musgrove, Cucklington, and Stoke Trister. All these churches are part of the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is a large area managed by a bishop.
