The land for the church and the nearby Bishop's House was bought by Jane Trower. She was the daughter of Walter Trower, who was a bishop. She paid £1050 for the land.

Jane wanted to give the land to the Diocese in Europe. However, there was a rule that an unmarried woman could not donate more than £50. So, her father, Bishop Walter Trower, helped her. He became part of the gift agreement and gave her back the money she spent.

The church's design is quite unique for Malta. It was made to look like a charming English village church.

Who Designed and Built It?

In 1865, Webster Paulson was chosen as the builder for the church. The plans for the church were created by Gordon MacDonald Hills, an architect who lived from 1826 to 1895.

The church was finished in 1866 and welcomed its first visitors. It was officially dedicated on April 23, 1867. Bishop Walter Trower of Gibraltar led the special ceremony.

The first leader of the church was Reverend Dr Thomas Burbidge. He was known as the first vicar.

The Bishop's House

Next to the church, there is another building called the Bishop's House. It was built in 1855. Its original purpose was to be a home for the church's vicar.

Today, the Bishop's House still serves the same purpose. It continues to be a residence for the church's leader.
