The Church of the Holy Trinity is a special church located in Sliema, Malta. It is part of the Church of England. This church was designed to look like a charming English village church. It first opened its doors in 1866.
About Holy Trinity Church
This beautiful church is known for its unique design. Unlike many buildings in Malta, it was built to resemble a traditional English country church. It has a High Victorian Gothic style. This means it uses design ideas from the Victorian era, with pointed arches and detailed stonework. The church is made from limestone, a common building material in Malta.
How the Church Was Built
The story of the church's beginning is quite interesting. A woman named Jane Trower helped make it possible. She was the daughter of Walter Trower, who was a bishop. Jane bought the land for the church and the nearby Bishop's House. She wanted to give the land to the church.
The church was designed by Gordon MacDonald Hills. Webster Paulson was the main builder for the project. Construction began in 1865. The church was finished in 1866. It was officially opened to the public that year. Bishop Walter Trower consecrated the church on April 23, 1867. This means he formally dedicated it for religious use. The first vicar, or priest, of the church was Reverend Dr Thomas Burbidge.
The Bishop's House
Right next to the Holy Trinity Church is a building called the Bishop's House. It was built in 1855. Its original purpose was to be a home for the vicar of the church. Today, the Bishop's House still serves this same purpose. It provides a residence for the church's priest.
